NEG35 Society Launch at the Horsham Museum and Art Gallery 12th May 2018

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

In a digital age right now you might wonder ‘Who shoots film anymore?’ but it is making a surprising come back with the younger generation discovering it for the first time (wanting something ‘new’ and ‘retro’ in world of photo-shopped visuals) and the older generation rediscovering old cameras that lie gathering dust in a long forgotten drawer.

NEG35’s intention is to show that, no matter what you prefer to shoot, the process of using analogue cameras and black and white film, processing the negatives and developing your own prints is an incredibly rewarding craft that can easily be learnt and enjoyed. They hope that the exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will share the joy of film photography and dark room printing and show that these skills can offer rich rewards in this time of digital quick fixes.

The Film Photography Exhibition, which will be held at the Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Horsham, West Sussex, UK between 12th May and 11th August, displays the work of both Paul Holmes and Sarah Wanstall - the founders of NEG35. Paul’s work covers many fields of interest but has a slant towards street and people going about their every day lives. You will see images from a resent trip to China along with more local images. Sarah’s work is more an expression of inspiration via the medium of film, poetry and multimedia based techniques to create artwork with no digital intervention.

What you will see from both these photographers is the classic use of film and wet printing to create images with the aid of light sensitive paper, chemical process and passion. No digital enhancement or processing is used to produce the pictures you see, even the poems seen are darkroom exposure overlays and some typeset using a typewriter.

Both artists explain their passion, inspiration, techniques and ideas along side their displays, while also inviting us to watch a video showing the developing processes used within the darkroom to create the final prints displayed.

If you are interested in joining The NEG35 Society then please do come along to the exhibition to get a taster of what NEG35 has to offer.
